Biography
Omara Portuondo is a Cuban singer and dancer. Born on 29 October 1930 in Havana, she began her professional career in the late 1940s as a dancer at the Tropicana cabaret and later as a vocalist.
She was a founding member of the vocal group Cuarteto d'Aida in the 1950s and pursued a solo career from the late 1960s. In 1996 she joined the Buena Vista Social Club project, performing on the album and appearing as herself in the 1999 documentary film directed by Wim Wenders.
