Biography

Orlando 'Cachaíto' López was a Cuban double bassist and composer. Born Candelario Orlando López Vergara in Havana on 2 February 1933, he came from a prominent musical family; his father was Orestes 'Macho' López and his uncle was the renowned bassist Israel 'Cachao' López.

López performed with various Cuban ensembles over several decades, including classical, jazz and popular groups. He gained international recognition as a member of the Buena Vista Social Club project from the mid-1990s, appearing as himself in Wim Wenders' 1999 documentary film of the same name. He released a solo album, Cachaíto, in 2001 and continued to perform with associated musicians until his death in Havana on 9 February 2009.
