Biography

Otto Karl Robert Wernicke (30 September 1893 – 7 November 1965) was a German actor. He appeared on stage from 1909 and later worked at theatres including the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich and the Staatstheater Berlin.

Wernicke is best known for playing police inspector Karl Lohmann in Fritz Lang’s M (1931) and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933). He also portrayed Captain Edward J. Smith in the 1943 film Titanic. Married to a Jewish woman, he continued working in Nazi Germany with a special dispensation from the Reich Chamber of Culture and was later included on the Gottbegnadeten-Liste.
