Biography
Paddy Chayefsky was an American playwright, screenwriter and novelist. Born Sidney Aaron Chayefsky in the Bronx, New York, he served in the US Army during the Second World War before beginning his writing career in radio and live television.
He became one of the leading dramatists of the Golden Age of Television with works such as the teleplay Marty (1953). He adapted Marty into a feature film in 1955 and went on to write screenplays for The Americanization of Emily (1964), The Hospital (1971) and Network (1976). He also wrote the novel and screenplay for Altered States (1980).
Chayefsky is the only person to have won three solo Academy Awards for Best Screenplay, for Marty, The Hospital and Network.
