Biography
Padma Devi (also credited as Padmadevi, Padma Debi and Padma) was an Indian actress and singer. Born Nilima in 1917 in Bengal (with ancestral roots in Madaripur), she began her career in 1931 with the lead role in the silent film Sea Goddess and appeared in more than one hundred films until 1979.
She was among the earliest action heroines in Indian cinema and performed songs in several early talkies. Later she took character roles in Bengali films, including Mahamaya Roy in Satyajit Ray’s The Music Room (Jalsaghar, 1958). She died in Calcutta on 1 February 1983.
