Biography

Pat Conroy, also credited as Donald Patrick Conroy, was an American novelist and screenwriter. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he attended the Citadel military college in South Carolina and later taught on Daufuskie Island before turning to writing full time.

His best-known novels include The Great Santini (1976), The Lords of Discipline (1980) and The Prince of Tides (1986). Several of his books were adapted into films, among them Conrack (1974), based on The Water Is Wide, and The Prince of Tides (1991), for which he wrote the screenplay with Becky Johnston.

Conroy died in Beaufort, South Carolina, in 2016.
