Biography
Pat Symonds is a British Formula One engineer and technical strategist. Born on 11 June 1953 in Bedford, Bedfordshire, he began his F1 career in the 1980s with Toleman and Benetton.
At Benetton he contributed to Michael Schumacher’s drivers’ titles in 1994 and 1995. He later worked with Renault, where the team secured consecutive titles for Fernando Alonso in 2005 and 2006, and held senior roles at Virgin Racing/Marussia and Williams. In 2017 he joined Formula 1 as Chief Technical Officer, overseeing regulatory changes including those for 2022.
Symonds appears as himself in the 2026 documentary Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend.
