Biography
Patrick Gowers, also credited as William Patrick Gowers, was an English composer known for his film and television scores. He was born on 5 May 1936 in Islington, London, and died on 30 December 2014 in London.
Gowers studied at the University of Cambridge, where he completed a doctorate on the music of Erik Satie in 1966. He worked as music director for Royal Shakespeare Company productions of Marat/Sade and later composed for films including Hamlet (1969).
He composed the music for the television series Smiley's People (1982), for which he won a BAFTA award in 1983, shared with his scores for The Woman in White (1982) and I Remember Nelson (1982). Gowers is also known for his work on the Granada Television Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett (1984–1994) and its related adaptations, including The Sign of Four (1987) and The Hound of the Baskervilles (1988).
