Biography
Patrick Moody Williams (23 April 1939 – 25 July 2018) was an American composer, arranger and conductor who worked extensively in film, television and jazz. Born in Bonne Terre, Missouri, he graduated from Duke University and studied music at Columbia University before moving to California in 1968.
Williams composed music for the television series Columbo (including episodes from 1977 to 1992), The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant (for which he wrote the theme), The Bob Newhart Show, The Streets of San Francisco and The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd. His film scores include Breaking Away (1979), All of Me (1984), The Cutting Edge (1992) and Cry-Baby (1990). He also wrote for more than 100 television films and miniseries.
He received four Emmy Awards (from 22 nominations), two Grammy Awards (from 21 nominations), an Academy Award nomination for Breaking Away and a Pulitzer Prize nomination for his orchestral work An American Concerto.
