Biography
Paul Vecchiali (28 April 1930 – 18 January 2023) was a French film director, screenwriter, producer and author. Born in Ajaccio, Corsica, he grew up in Toulon and studied at the École Polytechnique. He began writing film criticism for Cahiers du Cinéma in the 1960s and made his first feature, Les Petits Drames, in 1961.
Vecchiali produced Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975). In 1976 he founded the production company Diagonale, which supported independent filmmakers including Jean-Claude Biette and Marie-Claude Treilhou. His own films include Femmes Femmes (1974), La Machine (1977) and Encore (1988). He directed more than fifty films for cinema and television.
