Biography

Pavel Landovský (1936–2014) was a Czech actor, playwright and director. He began his career in regional theatres in Teplice, Šumperk, Klatovy and Pardubice after studying at a secondary technical school of mechanical engineering. He later performed at the Činoherní klub in Prague and wrote his first play, Hodinový hoteliér, which premiered there in 1969.

Landovský appeared in notable films including Closely Watched Trains (1966), Marketa Lazarová (1967), Ragtime (1981) as Solomon Peretz, and The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) as Pavel. In 1971 the communist regime banned him from film and television. He was one of the initiators of Charter 77 and faced harassment by the secret police. He emigrated to Austria in the late 1970s and joined the Burgtheater in Vienna. After the Velvet Revolution he returned to Prague in 1990 and resumed acting, including in Václav Havel’s Audience.

He died on 10 October 2014 in Kytín from a heart attack.
