Biography

Peter Brachacki was a production designer who worked for BBC Television in the 1960s. Born Kazimierz Piotr Brachacki in Dębieńsko, Poland, in 1926, he moved to the United Kingdom and built a career in television design.

He is best remembered as the first production designer on Doctor Who (1963). Brachacki designed the interior of the TARDIS for the opening episode An Unearthly Child, shot and broadcast in 1963, as well as the junkyard exterior setting. He worked only on that episode and its re-mount before being replaced by Barry Newbery and never returned to the series.

Brachacki also designed sets for other BBC programmes, including When the Boat Comes In (1976–1977), for which he received a British Academy Television Award nomination. He was portrayed by David Annen in the 2013 docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time.
