Biography
Peter Donat was a Canadian actor whose career spanned stage, film and television from the 1950s to the early 2000s. Born Pierre Collingwood Donat on 20 January 1928 in Kentville, Nova Scotia, he studied at Acadia University and the Yale School of Drama. He was a co-founding member of the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and appeared regularly at the Stratford Festival in Canada.
He is known for film roles including Questadt in The Godfather Part II (1974), Don Jacovich in The China Syndrome (1979), Kerner in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988), Jason Larrabee in The War of the Roses (1989) and Samuel Sutherland in The Game (1997). On television he played William Mulder in The X-Files (1995–1999) and appeared in series such as Murder, She Wrote. A nephew of the British actor Robert Donat, he won a Theatre World Award for his Broadway debut in The First Gentleman (1957) and received a Genie Award nomination for The Bay Boy (1984). He died on 10 September 2018 in Point Reyes Station, California.
