Biography

Peter Egan is an English actor. Born on 28 September 1946 in Hampstead, London, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after attending St George's Roman Catholic Comprehensive School and the London Oratory School.

He is known for television roles including Paul Ryman in the sitcom Ever Decreasing Circles (1984–89), Hugh 'Shrimpie' MacClare in Downton Abbey (2012–15) and Martin Hughes in Unforgotten (2015–21). Earlier credits include Hogarth in Big Breadwinner Hog (1969) and the title role in Prince Regent (1979).

Film appearances include the Duke of Sutherland in Chariots of Fire (1981), Lord Walton in Bean (1997) and Victor in Death at a Funeral (2007). He was married to actress Myra Frances from 1972 until her death in 2021.
