Biography

Peter Fitz (8 August 1931 – 10 January 2013) was a German stage and film actor. He trained at the drama school of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg in the 1950s and later worked at theatres including the Schauspiel Frankfurt. In 1970 he joined the ensemble of the Berlin Schaubühne, where he remained for many years under directors Peter Stein and Klaus Michael Grüber.

Fitz performed at major German-language venues such as the Vienna Burgtheater, the Munich Kammerspiele, Berlin’s Schiller Theater and the Salzburg Festival. He was named Actor of the Year by Theater heute magazine in 1980 and 1983. Although primarily a stage actor, he appeared in films including Au Revoir les Enfants (1987) as Muller and Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) as György Eszter, as well as numerous television productions. He received a German Film Award nomination in 1996 for his role in Beim nächsten Kuß knall’ ich ihn nieder (1995). Fitz was the father of actors Hendrikje Fitz and Florian Fitz.
