Biography
Peter Bryan George (26 March 1924 – 1 June 1966) was a Welsh author and screenwriter. Born in Treorchy, Rhondda, he served as a flight lieutenant and navigator in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, later rejoining as a fighter controller before retiring in 1961. He published crime and thriller novels from the early 1950s, often under pseudonyms including Peter Bryant.
His 1958 novel Red Alert, published in the UK as Two Hours to Doom under the name Peter Bryant, provided the basis for Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 film Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. George received a co-writing credit on the screenplay with Kubrick and Terry Southern, and shared a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He also wrote the official novelisation of the film, published in 1963.
