Biography

Phil Hartman was a Canadian-born American actor, comedian and voice artist. He was born Philip Edward Hartmann on 24 September 1948 in Brantford, Ontario, and moved to the United States as a child. After studying graphic arts, he worked as an album-cover designer before joining the Groundlings improv group in 1975.

Hartman gained prominence as a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1986 to 1994. He voiced characters including Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure on The Simpsons, and played Bill McNeal in the sitcom NewsRadio. His film roles include appearances in ¡Three Amigos! (1986), Spaceballs (1987), Jingle All the Way (1996) and Small Soldiers (1998). He also provided voices for the Air Conditioner and Hanging Lamp in The Brave Little Toaster (1987). Hartman died on 28 May 1998.
