Biography
Phil Joanou (born 20 November 1961) is an American film, television and music video director. He was born in La Cañada Flintridge, California, and studied at UCLA's theatre department before attending USC's cinema programme. His award-winning student short Last Chance Dance (1984) led to work with Steven Spielberg on two episodes of the anthology series Amazing Stories.
Joanou's feature debut was the comedy Three O'Clock High (1987). He is known for his long association with U2, directing their concert documentary Rattle and Hum (1988) as well as multiple music videos. His other films include State of Grace (1990), Final Analysis (1992), Heaven's Prisoners (1996), Entropy (1999) and Gridiron Gang (2006). He also directed an episode of the neo-noir anthology series Fallen Angels (1993) and the comedy special Chris Tucker Live (2015).
