Biography
Philip Dorn (born Hein van der Niet; also credited as Frits van Dongen and Hein van der Niet) was a Dutch actor who worked in European and Hollywood films. He made his stage debut at age 14 and entered professional theatre in the early 1920s. His first film role came in 1934 in the Netherlands; he later appeared in German productions before moving to the United States in 1939.
Under contract with MGM, he adopted the name Philip Dorn and appeared in films including Enemy Agent (1940), Tarzan's Secret Treasure (1941), Random Harvest (1942) as Dr. Jonathan Benet, Passage to Marseille (1944), I Remember Mama (1948) as Papa, and The Fighting Kentuckian (1949). He returned to Europe for further work in the early 1950s before retiring from acting around 1955 following an injury that affected his speech. He died in Los Angeles in 1975.
