Biography

Philip G. Epstein was an American screenwriter. Born in New York City on 22 August 1909, he attended Pennsylvania State College, graduating in 1931. After college he moved to Hollywood with his identical twin brother Julius, where the pair established themselves as screenwriters.

Epstein is best known for his work with Julius Epstein and Howard Koch on the screenplay for Casablanca (1942), which won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Other credits include The Strawberry Blonde (1941), The Man Who Came to Dinner (1942), Mr. Skeffington (1944) and Arsenic and Old Lace (1944).

Epstein died of cancer in Hollywood on 7 February 1952.
