Biography
Pippo Delbono is an Italian theatre and film director, actor and author. Born on 1 June 1959 in Varazze, he trained in traditional theatre before moving to Denmark in the early 1980s, where he joined the Farfa group at Odin Teatret and studied principles of oriental theatre through work on body and voice. He later worked with Pina Bausch in Germany.
In 1987 he founded the Compagnia Pippo Delbono, with which he has created numerous total theatre works performed internationally. A notable shift came with Barboni (1997), developed with socially marginalised performers; subsequent pieces include La rabbia, Guerra, Urlo and La Gioia. He received the Europe Prize Theatrical Realities in 2009.
Delbono has also directed films including the documentary Guerra (2003), winner of a David di Donatello, Grido (2006) and Amore carne (2011). He played Tancredi Recchi in Luca Guadagnino's I Am Love (2009).
