Biography
Hang-Sang Poon is a Hong Kong-Canadian cinematographer, film director, producer and actor. He trained at Hong Kong Baptist University and began working in film in the early 1980s after earlier roles at Hong Kong television.
Poon has served as director of photography on numerous Hong Kong productions since the 1980s, including Peking Opera Blues (1986), A Chinese Ghost Story (1987) and Center Stage (1991). He has collaborated with directors such as Tsui Hark, Yim Ho, John Woo and Stephen Chow. He also appeared as the Theatre Doorman in Peking Opera Blues.
Poon has won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Cinematography twice, for The Island (1985) and Center Stage (1991), and the Golden Horse Award for Best Cinematography for Red Dust (1990) and Center Stage (1991). He was selected as Hong Kong representative on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences board of judges in 2016.
