Biography
Purv Pullen (born Almy Purves Pullen) was an American voice actor and sound effects artist known for his imitations of birds and animals. Born on 2 February 1909 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began working in radio before providing vocal effects for animated films from the 1930s onwards.
He contributed bird sounds, often uncredited, to Disney productions including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940) and Sleeping Beauty (1959), as well as numerous shorts. Pullen also voiced Cheeta in Tarzan films and worked in sound effects for other features. From 1945 he collaborated with Spike Jones and his City Slickers under the stage name Dr. Horatio Q. Birdbath.
Pullen performed as a ventriloquist with a dummy named Johnny and provided bird sounds for the Enchanted Tiki Room attractions. He was heard on radio as Roscoe the Dog and gave puppet shows in Vacaville, California, where he lived for many years. He died on 18 October 1992 in Woodland, California.
