Biography
Rachel Field (1894–1942) was an American novelist, poet and writer of children's fiction. Born in New York City, she grew up in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and attended Radcliffe College as a special student.
She is best known for the children's novel Hitty, Her First Hundred Years (1929), which won the Newbery Medal, and the adult novel All This and Heaven Too (1938), a bestseller based on the life of her great-aunt that was adapted into the 1940 film of the same name. Other notable works include Time Out of Mind (1935) and And Now Tomorrow (1942).
Field married literary agent Arthur S. Pederson in 1935 and collaborated with him on To See Ourselves (1937). She also wrote poetry, plays and the English lyrics for Franz Schubert's Ave Maria used in the Disney film Fantasia (1940).
