Biography
Raf Vallone (17 February 1916 – 31 October 2002) was an Italian actor. Born in Tropea, Calabria, he studied law and philosophy at the University of Turin before working as a journalist and playing professional football for Torino. He made his film debut in We the Living (1942) and gained prominence with his role in the neorealist film Bitter Rice (1949).
Vallone appeared in numerous international productions, including Two Women (1960), El Cid (1961), The Italian Job (1969) and Lion of the Desert (1981). He played Cardinal Lamberto in The Godfather Part III (1990). On stage he was noted for performances in works by Arthur Miller, notably A View from the Bridge (1962 film adaptation).
He was married to actress Elena Varzi from 1952 until his death in Rome.
