Biography

Rainer Behr is a German dancer and choreographer. Born in Neustadt an der Waldnaab in 1964, he trained as a gymnastics teacher before studying dance at the Folkwang University of the Arts. From 1990 to 1995 he performed with the Folkwang Tanzstudio in Essen and as a guest dancer with Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. In 1995 Pina Bausch invited him to join the ensemble as a permanent member.

Behr has performed in numerous works by Pina Bausch. He appeared as a dancer in Pedro Almodóvar's Talk to Her (2002) and as Self in the documentary Pina (2011) directed by Wim Wenders. He has also choreographed works since 1989, including pieces for the Folkwang Tanzstudio and, from 2020, for Tanztheater Wuppertal, such as the full-length Schlafende Frau (2021).
