Biography
RaMell Ross is an American filmmaker, photographer and academic. He directed and co-wrote the screenplay for the 2024 film Nickel Boys. His directorial debut was the 2018 documentary Hale County This Morning, This Evening.
Ross was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1982 and grew up in Virginia. He studied at Georgetown University and earned an MFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design. He joined the faculty at Brown University in 2016 as an associate professor of visual art.
Hale County This Morning, This Evening won a Peabody Award and received Academy Award and Primetime Emmy nominations. Nickel Boys earned Ross a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Director and an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, shared with Joslyn Barnes.
