Biography
Ray Rigby (1916–1995) was a British screenwriter and novelist. He wrote for British television series in the 1950s and 1960s, including an episode of The Avengers (1961). His screenplays for The Hill (1965) and Operation Crossbow (1965) are among his best-known works.
Rigby drew on his own service as a private in the British Army during the Second World War, including time spent in field punishment detention centres, for the screenplay of The Hill, directed by Sidney Lumet. The film received the Best Screenplay award at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival and a Writers' Guild of Great Britain award the following year; it was also nominated for a BAFTA. He later published a novel based on the same story.
In 1972 Rigby moved to Mexico, settling in Guadalajara, where he lived until his death.
