Biography
Regina Taylor is an American actress and playwright. Born on 22 August 1960 in Dallas, Texas, she trained at Southern Methodist University before moving to New York, where she began her career in theatre and television.
She first gained attention for her role as Mrs Carter in the 1989 film Lean on Me. Taylor is known for her performance as Lilly Harper in the television series I'll Fly Away (1991–1993), for which she won a Golden Globe Award and an NAACP Image Award. Her film credits include Clockers (1995), in which she played Iris Jeeter, Courage Under Fire (1996) and The Negotiator (1998). She has also appeared in recurring roles in series such as The Unit and The Blacklist.
On stage, Taylor was the first Black woman to play Juliet in a Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet. As a playwright, her works include Crowns. In 2017 she was appointed the Denzel Washington Endowed Chair in Theater at Fordham University.
