Biography
Renato Berta is a Swiss cinematographer and film director. Born on 2 March 1945 in Bellinzona, Switzerland, he trained at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. He began working as a cinematographer in 1969 and has contributed to more than 100 films.
Berta is known for his collaborations with directors including Alain Tanner and Jean-Marie Straub. His credits include Au Revoir les Enfants (1987), Full Moon in Paris (1984), May Fools (1990), Same Old Song (1997), Nightcap (2000), Leopardi (2014), The King of Laughter (2021), Il Buco (2021) and The Tasters (2025). He received a César Award for Best Cinematography for Au Revoir les Enfants in 1988 and a David di Donatello for Best Cinematography for We Believed in 2011. In 2013 he was appointed Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
