Biography
Richard Addinsell (1904–1977) was an English composer best known for his film scores. Born in London, he briefly studied law at Hertford College, Oxford, before pursuing music at the Royal College of Music and studying further in Berlin and Vienna.
He began composing for the theatre in the 1920s, collaborating with Clemence Dane, and scored his first film, The Amateur Gentleman, in 1936. His work includes the score for Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939), the Warsaw Concerto from Dangerous Moonlight (1941), and music for films such as Gaslight (1940), Blithe Spirit (1945) and Under Capricorn (1949). He also wrote songs and provided accompaniment for Joyce Grenfell's revues and one-woman shows.
