Biography
Richard Mulligan was an American character actor. Born in New York City on 13 November 1932, he studied playwriting at Columbia University and began his career in regional theatre before making his Broadway debut in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play All the Way Home (1960).
His film roles included General George Armstrong Custer in Little Big Man (1970). On television he played Burt Campbell in the sitcom Soap (1977–1981) and Dr Harry Weston in Empty Nest (1988–1995). He also appeared in episodes of series such as I Dream of Jeannie, Bonanza and The Golden Girls.
Mulligan was the brother of film director Robert Mulligan. He received two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. He died in Los Angeles on 26 September 2000.
