Richard White gives Gaston a voice so pleased with itself that the joke needs little explaining. His reputation rests heavily on Beauty and the Beast, but the performance earns that attention: broad, funny and well matched to Belle’s restraint.

Richard White’s Gaston sounds certain of a warm reception before anyone has offered him one. In Beauty and the Beast (1991), that confidence makes his broad delivery funny without requiring every line to be pushed harder. We laughed at how much admiration he seems to hear in advance; White makes self-satisfaction audible. Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise’s film gives him a crucial counterweight in Paige O’Hara’s Belle, whose voice suggests she has already spent enough time being patronised. White can be expansive because O’Hara does not compete with him.
White came to the role from musical theatre and opera, having begun there in the late 1970s and created the title role in Phantom (1987). His powerful low tenor-baritone gives the character song Gaston the necessary weight without making its vanity any less ridiculous. Howard Ashman, the film’s lyricist and a creative guide, helped White find his own way into the delivery. The animators also incorporated White’s physical mannerisms and vocal inflections. His contribution extended to how Gaston moved, which matters when so much of the joke depends on his certainty that he deserves to be looked at.
Beauty and the Beast became the centre of his screen reputation, and subsequent work has repeatedly returned him to Gaston. House of Mouse (2001–2003) brought an early television reprise; further Disney projects carried the role into the 2020s. His stage career continued alongside those returns, including Sir Danvers Carew in Jekyll & Hyde (2012). It is worth keeping that larger working life in mind, even if this one animated performance remains the clearest reason to seek him out.
There is a limit to what those returns can tell us about White as a screen actor. They extend one successful piece of casting; they do not establish what he might do with a quite different character. Our enthusiasm rests on the original, where his forceful delivery works because the film has room for Belle’s quieter exasperation. Start with Beauty and the Beast, and resist the temptation to listen only for the songs.
Biography
Richard White (born 4 August 1953) is an American actor, opera singer and voice actor. He is best known for providing the voice of Gaston in the 1991 Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast and reprising the role in the television series House of Mouse (2001–2003) and later projects including Once Upon a Studio (2023).
White has performed in numerous stage productions. He created the title role of Erik in the world premiere of the musical Phantom and appeared on Broadway in The Most Happy Fella. He has also performed in revivals of Brigadoon, South Pacific and Auntie Mame, and played Gaylord Ravenal in Show Boat at Paper Mill Playhouse.
