Biography
Risto Karhula is a Finnish production designer and screenwriter. He was born on 24 November 1959 in Suomenniemi and has worked as a freelance designer in film, television and theatre since 1983.
Karhula is known for his production design on several Aki Kaurismäki films, including Ariel (1988) and The Match Factory Girl (1990). His other credits include The Tough Ones (1999), Bad Boys: A True Story (2003) and The Match Factory Girl (1990). He has also designed for numerous television series.
He has twice won the Jussi Award for best production design: in 1992 for Iskelmäprinssi and in 1998 for Sagojogan ministeri and Lunastus. In addition to design work, he has written for television and radio series, including Tohtori Raimo from 2015.
