Biography
Robert Alda, born Alfonso Giuseppe Giovanni Roberto D'Abruzzo, was an American actor, singer and dancer. He was born on 26 February 1914 in New York City and died on 3 May 1986 in Los Angeles.
Alda began his career in vaudeville and burlesque before appearing on Broadway, where he starred as Sky Masterson in the original production of Guys and Dolls (1950), winning a Tony Award, and in What Makes Sammy Run? (1964). His film roles include portraying George Gershwin in Rhapsody in Blue (1945) and Allen Loomis in Imitation of Life (1959). He moved to Italy in the early 1960s and appeared in numerous European films, while also working in American television.
He was the father of actors Alan Alda and Antony Alda.
