Robert Englund's Freddy Krueger is a killer who is enjoying himself, and that pleasure, not the glove, is what makes him frightening. It is a stage actor's performance, big and knowing, and it has been his fortune and his cage for four decades.

Fred Krueger is having a good time. That is what Robert Englund brought to A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), and it is what stays with us: not the glove or the burns but the pleasure, a killer who treats the dreams of sleeping teenagers as a playground he has been handed the keys to. Wes Craven's film runs on black humour, and Englund's malice is the same colour. We found the enjoyment worse than any threat. A monster who wants you dead is frightening; a monster who is amused by you is worse, because you feel you are being laughed at while you run. Our one reservation then still stands: the broader moments come close to making him harmless, and a little less showing off would sometimes have helped.
It is a stage actor's performance. Englund trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art's Meadow Brook branch and in regional theatre and Shakespeare festivals, and he brought the big gesture and the operatic line to a genre that mostly asked its villains to stand still and breathe. He describes himself as a character actor who began by playing sidekicks in the 1970s, and the record agrees: supporting parts in Buster and Billie, Stay Hungry and Big Wednesday, then Willie, the sympathetic alien in the 1983 miniseries V, the first time anyone gave him a lead's worth of attention. Freddy followed straight after and swallowed everything.
Seven more films took Freddy through to Freddy vs. Jason (2003), with a television series, Freddy's Nightmares, alongside. We have not reviewed the sequels and will not judge them at length, but the pattern is on the record: the later films pushed Freddy towards broad comedy, the one-liners came to define him, and the darker figure of 1984 receded. It is not hard to see why. Englund's gift is enjoyment, and enjoyment is easy to overdo. Craven is the director who got the best out of him, and their second film together, Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994), put Englund on screen as both Krueger and himself and went back to the original tone.
The cost was typecasting, and he has paid it. Since Freddy the work has been mostly horror guest parts on television, Supernatural, Criminal Minds, and Victor Creel in Stranger Things (2022), with some directing, 976-EVIL and Killer Pad, on the side. He is still working, and he has said he will not put the glove back on: "I'm too old and thick to play Freddy now." We take him at his word, and we would rather see him given an evening of something else than a ninth Elm Street. Start with the 1984 film, and watch his face rather than his hand.

Robert Englund is an American actor and director. Born on 6 June 1947 in Glendale, California, he trained at the University of California, Los Angeles, Oakland University and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and performed in regional theatre for several years, including Shakespeare productions.
He is best known for portraying Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series, beginning with the 1984 original and reprising the role in seven further films, including Freddy vs. Jason (2003). Earlier, he had a breakthrough as Willie in the 1983 miniseries V. Englund received Saturn Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988). He has also directed the films 976-EVIL (1988) and Killer Pad (2008), and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
