Biography
Robert Enrico (13 April 1931 – 23 February 2001) was a French film director and screenwriter. Born in Liévin, Pas-de-Calais, to Italian immigrant parents, he trained at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris after studying at the Sorbonne.
He first gained international recognition with the short film An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (1961), an adaptation of the Ambrose Bierce story that won the Palme d'Or for short films at Cannes in 1962 and the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Subject in 1964. An edited version aired as an episode of the American series The Twilight Zone in 1964.
Enrico directed numerous features, including The Wise Guys (1965), The Last Adventure (1967), The Secret (1974) and The Old Gun (1975), the last of which won the César Award for Best Film. He also contributed to the miniseries The French Revolution (1989).
