Biography

Robert Farnon was a Canadian composer, conductor, arranger and trumpeter. Born in Toronto, he began his career playing trumpet and arranging in Canadian radio orchestras before moving to the United Kingdom after the Second World War, where he became known for light orchestral music and film and television scores.

He composed or arranged music for more than forty films, including I Know Where I'm Going! (1945), Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1951), Shalako (1968) and Bear Island (1979), and contributed incidental music to the television series The Prisoner (1967). Farnon also wrote themes for series such as Colditz (1972–74) and Secret Army (1977–79). He received four Ivor Novello Awards, a Grammy Award and the Order of Canada.
