Biography
Robert Klane (1941–2023) was an American screenwriter, novelist and director. A 1963 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he began his career with the novels The Horse is Dead (1968) and Where's Poppa? (1970), the latter of which he adapted into a 1970 feature film.
Klane wrote screenplays for films including Every Little Crook and Nanny (1972), Fire Sale (1977), The Man with One Red Shoe (1985), National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) and Weekend at Bernie's (1989). He also wrote six episodes of the television series MASH (1972) and contributed to Tracey Takes On..., for which he shared an Emmy Award in 1997. His directing credits include Thank God It's Friday (1978) and Weekend at Bernie's II* (1993).
Klane died of kidney failure in Woodland Hills, California, on 29 August 2023.
