Biography
Roberto Cobo, also credited as Calambres, was a Mexican actor. Born Roberto García Romero on 20 February 1930 in General Zuazua, Nuevo León, he began performing in theatre as a child and made his film debut in the mid-1940s. He appeared in more than eighty films between 1947 and 2002.
Cobo is best known for his role as Jaibo in Luis Buñuel’s The Young and the Damned (1950; original title Los olvidados), for which he received the first Ariel Award for Best Youth Actor. He later played La Manuela in Arturo Ripstein’s The Place Without Limits (1978). Other credits include Subida al cielo (1952) and Dulces compañías (1996).
His apartment building collapsed during the 1985 Mexico City earthquake; he was rescued but suffered a serious hip injury that affected his mobility thereafter. Cobo died of cancer on 2 August 2002 in Mexico City.
