Biography

Rodney Brooks is an Australian roboticist. He was Panasonic Professor of Robotics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and director of its Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1997 to 2007. He is a founder of iRobot and co-founder of Rethink Robotics and Robust AI.

Brooks received an MA in pure mathematics from Flinders University and a PhD in computer science from Stanford University in 1981. He has held positions at Carnegie Mellon University and Stanford before joining the MIT faculty in 1984. He is known for work on behaviour-based robotics and for the 1989 paper 'Fast, Cheap and Out of Control: A Robot Invasion of the Solar System'.

In 1997 he appeared as himself, credited as Robot Scientist, in the Errol Morris documentary Fast, Cheap & Out of Control.
