Biography
Romain Gary (born Roman Kacew) was a French novelist, screenwriter and film director. He also wrote under the pen name Émile Ajar and other pseudonyms.
Gary wrote the screenplay for the 1962 film The Longest Day. He is the only author to have won the Prix Goncourt twice, once under each of two names. His novels include The Roots of Heaven (1956) and The Life Before Us (1975, as Émile Ajar). Several of his works have been adapted for film, among them Promise at Dawn and White Dog.
Gary was born in Vilnius in 1914 and died in Paris in 1980.
