Biography
Rosa Valetti, also credited as Rosa Alice Vallentin, was a German actress, cabaret performer and singer. Born in Berlin, she began her career on suburban Berlin stages and later appeared in theatres in Paris, Brussels and Vienna. She worked as a director during the First World War and turned to cabaret after meeting Kurt Tucholsky, founding her own shows including Café Grössenwahn in 1920.
Valetti performed in the original production of Bertolt Brecht's Die Dreigroschenoper as Mrs Peachum in 1928. She appeared in more than forty films from 1911, often in maternal or supporting roles. Notable credits include the housekeeper in Tartuffe (1925), a role in Asphalt (1929), Guste in The Blue Angel (1930) and the bartender in M (1931).
In 1933 she left Nazi Germany for Vienna, where she worked at the Theater in der Josefstadt and made guest appearances in Prague. She moved to Palestine in 1936 and died in Vienna the following year. Her brother was actor Hermann Vallentin and her daughter was actress Lisl Valetti.
