Biography
Ying Ruocheng (also credited as 英若诚) was a Chinese actor, director, playwright and translator. Born in Beijing in 1929, he graduated from Tsinghua University and joined the Beijing People's Art Theatre, where he performed roles including Pockmark Liu in Lao She's Teahouse.
He appeared as the detention camp governor in Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987) and as Lama Norbu in Little Buddha (1993). He also portrayed Kublai Khan in the 1982 miniseries Marco Polo. From 1986 to 1990 he served as vice minister of culture. In 1983 he translated and starred as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller's production of Death of a Salesman in Beijing.
Ying died in Beijing in 2003.
