Biography
Ruth Ford (1911–2009) was an American actress and model. Born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, she studied at the University of Mississippi before joining Orson Welles’s Mercury Theatre in the late 1930s. She appeared in Welles’s film Too Much Johnson (1938) and moved to Hollywood in the early 1940s, where she took small and uncredited parts in features including Air Force (1943) and Across the Pacific (1942).
Her credited film roles include Margaret Wilson in Wilson (1944), Sister Clotilde in The Keys of the Kingdom (1944) and Cornelia Van Borden in Dragonwyck (1946). She later returned to New York and built a stage career with Broadway appearances in plays such as Requiem for a Nun (1959), written for her by William Faulkner. Ford was married to actors Peter van Eyck and Zachary Scott, and her brother was the writer and artist Charles Henri Ford.
