Biography
Ruth Goetz was an American playwright and screenwriter. She collaborated extensively with her husband, Augustus Goetz, on stage plays and screenplays.
Born in Philadelphia, she worked early in her career as a story editor and costume designer. The couple's best-known work was their 1947 Broadway adaptation of Henry James's novel Washington Square, retitled The Heiress. They wrote the screenplay for the 1949 film version directed by William Wyler.
Their other screen credits include Carrie (1952). Goetz was active in the Dramatists Guild and mentored young playwrights through the Young Playwrights Festival.
