Biography

Salem Ludwig (31 July 1915 – 1 April 2007) was an American character actor. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he made his stage debut in 1938 and his New York debut after military service. He was a member of the Actors Studio and studied the Stanislavsky method with Robert Lewis and Tamara Daykarhanova.

Blacklisted in 1957, Ludwig found only limited stage work for a period but later accumulated many film and television credits. These include America America (1963) as Odysseus Topouzoglou, Three Sisters (1966) as Ferapont, Heartburn (1986) as a judge, Family Business (1989) as Nat, The Object of My Affection (1998) as Mr Shapiro, Unfaithful (2002) as the man with a suitcase and The Savages (2007) as Mr Sperry. Television roles included appearances in All in the Family, Law & Order and The Sopranos.

He also worked as an acting instructor at HB Studio in New York alongside Uta Hagen and continued performing on stage and screen into his nineties.
