Biography

Samuel Barber was an American composer of orchestral, choral, operatic and piano music. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on 9 March 1910, he studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia from 1926. His principal collaborator was the composer Gian Carlo Menotti.

Barber received two Pulitzer Prizes for Music, for the opera Vanessa (1958) and the Piano Concerto (1963). His Violin Concerto, Op. 14 (1939), supplied the background music for the 2011 film The Deep Blue Sea directed by Terence Davies.

He died in New York on 23 January 1981.
