Biography
Samuel D. Hunter is an American playwright and screenwriter. He holds degrees in playwriting from New York University, the University of Iowa Playwrights Workshop and the Juilliard School.
Hunter is best known for his plays A Bright New Boise (2011 Obie Award for Playwriting) and The Whale (2013 Drama Desk Award and Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play). He adapted the latter into the screenplay for the 2022 film directed by Darren Aronofsky. He has also written for the television series Baskets (2016). Hunter received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2014.
