Scott Neal lets teenage shyness set the pace in Beautiful Thing. We rate the rawness of his work with Glen Berry, which makes their attraction matter even when the script gives them too little life outside it.

Scott Neal and Glen Berry are awkward together in Beautiful Thing (1996), and the romance is better for it. Neal's Steven Pearce and Berry's Jamie Gangel seem to find being liked difficult to believe. We were moved by that uncertainty, which makes their attraction feel like something neither boy can take for granted. Neal is persuasive here because he allows the acting to remain raw, without tidying up the discomfort for us. We do not need a polished declaration from either boy to understand why the relationship matters.
The film was Neal's breakthrough. He went on to play PC Luke Ashton in The Bill from 1997 to 2003, again portraying a character exploring his sexuality. He also took a lead role as Charlie in The Wonderland Experience (2002), with later television appearances in Hollyoaks (2010–2012) and EastEnders (2015).
Berry is essential to what works about Neal's performance. Their shared shyness gives the romance its pace, with each boy's uncertainty making the other's attention feel important. That helps in a film whose individual exchanges are stronger than the connections between them: Don Fairservice's editing does not quite give the story a steady rhythm. We stay interested in the two performers even when the film feels loosely assembled.
The more serious problem is Harvey's writing, which tells us more about the boys' emerging sexuality than about their separate personalities. We wanted the ordinary details that would make Steven recognisable away from this romance, and a sympathetic performance cannot invent all of them. Neal does enough with the part to keep that frustration from spoiling the film. Start with Beautiful Thing, but do not expect its script to satisfy all the curiosity its actors encourage.

Scott Neal is a British actor born on 10 June 1978 in Islington, London. He trained at the Anna Scher Theatre School and began his career in the early 1990s.
He is known for his role as Steven Pearce in the 1996 film Beautiful Thing. Neal appeared regularly in the police drama The Bill (1997–1999 and 2002–2003) as PC Luke Ashton, and has had roles in EastEnders (2015) as Jason Adams, Prime Suspect (1995), Casualty (2017) and other series.
